What to expect at a flag football camp

While each coach will implement their own strategy and schedule around camp, typically, flag football camps are one to three days and hosted by the flag football coach and staff. During camp, practices usually run around three hours long and include combine style testing, position drills and 7 on 7 drills. Student-athletes can expect to learn the training style of the coach, their offensive and defensive strategies and improve overall position-specific skills.

Coaches also use camp as an opportunity to evaluate the top prospects on their list. Here are a few areas they look for:

  • Position quickness: Flag football is a fast-paced game where each play counts. Coaches seek out athletic players who have sharp, quick movements, whether they’re a rusher or wide receiver.
  • Growth potential: Some flag football players may have more experience than others, while some may have only participated in 5 on 5 programs. That’s ok. Coaches look for student-athletes who have the potential to grow into a star player, which is why they focus on agility and versatility.
  • Coachability: Even the best players need to have a certain level of coachability to get a scholarship offer. Leadership qualities are incredibly important to college coaches as they build the foundation of their flag football programs.

Every athlete aims to compete well at camp, but it doesn’t automatically mean they’re going to get recruited. To set yourself up for success, send the coach a reminder that you’re attending they’re camp, along with your online recruiting profile. Securing an online evaluation first is key to getting noticed in-person.
